BOB DAVIS ART
1994
Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial
Competition, finalist
Anchorage, Alaska
with Sheila Wyne and Kim Brown
The Memorial was designed to encompass an entire block of the downtown Park Strip in Anchorage. A central stone retaining wall holds back the mounded-up earth and inset metal walls with cutout figures encompass the gathering space, the center point of the piece that reaches out to the community through arms/pathways leading towards and framing views of Cook Inlet, the Chugach Mountains and downtown Anchorage. Along a circular path arcing around the mound are a series of large stone letters, the "I Have A Dream" benches.
